Data Architect

Job Location San Jose, California


As a Data Architect, you will focus on expanding SleepIQ’s ability to use and analyze our data as a strategic asset and enabler. You will design, develop and implement data models and solutions for SleepIQ and Sleep Number enterprise data to support the business, consumer and analytical needs across the organization. The goal is to uncover data-driven insights aimed at improving our ability and understanding of the customer experience and business drivers. This role will play a critical role in empowering business decisions that deliver world-class, personalized sleep experiences for our customers across Sleep Number experiences.


  • Help define and implement SleepIQ’s information and data architecture, standards and strategies
  • Develop high-level database architectures and ensure that database designs are consistent with information architecture and information management standards as well as industry standards
  • Drive and define an overarching data architecture vision and strategy to maximize the optimization of SleepIQ’s data assets
  • Design, develop and communicate data models at the conceptual, logical and application levels
  • Map data sources, document interfaces and data movement across SleepIQ
  • Develop an enterprise-wide vision, roadmap and implementation plans for data governance, information lifecycle, metadata management and data integration
  • Work directly with analytics, algorithm, product and business stakeholders to understand their respective requirements and translate them into data architecture solutions


  • BS in Computer Science or Engineering
  • Background in computer science, mathematics, or similar quantitative field with a minimum of 3-5 years professional experience
  • Programming experience (Java, JQL, SQL, Scala preferred) with experience in data modeling
  • Advanced skills using one or more scripting languages (e.g., Python, bash, etc.)
  • Extract Transform Load (ETL) experience using Spark, Kafka, Hadoop, or similar technologies
  • Data visualization experience using R, Python, Tableau or PowerBI a plus
  • Solid understanding and experience implementing cloud data platform technologies (Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services)
  • Passionate about the business and product problems to be solved and using high-precision data analytics and models that contribute useful insights and customer value 
  • Keen ability to work collectively with engineering and product managers to understand and translate data-driven initiatives and potential ideas into fully developed customer and partner solutions and experiences 
  • Exceptional problem solving, critical reasoning and creative thinking and skills. Ability to identify core and edge cases, and dependencies in any scenario 
  • Experience with identifying and resolving issues working with disparate sources of data and data quality 
  • Exceptional communication skills and an ability to connect people with different points of view and with varying levels of experience 
  • Experienced in translating ideas into specific qualified and quantified action items. Ability to develop detailed plans with specific goals, priorities, timelines and budgets to effectuate ideas into products
