Senior Manager, Technical Product Development

Job Location Minneapolis, Minnesota

Position Purpose: 

The Senior Manager, Technical Product Development has the amazing opportunity to define and deliver the technical capabilities that bring the Sleep Number digital product experience to life and is the foundation of the life-long customer journey.  This role will lead the strategy and vision of how the user experience will come to life technically and the overall development, daily management and delivery of the SleepIQ digital integration capabilities.  This role will partner with the customer experience product owner roles to carry the technical knowledge into strategic conversations about the product. Being the integration point between the technical teams and the customer experience teams. 

Working in an agile manner to build detailed requirements and user experience definition in support of the connected sleep experience and the integration point of the Sleep Number customer experience.  This role is integral to how the Sleep Number customer will interact with and experience their product so ability to think forward and plan for scale and simplicity will be the key to success in this role. New and in market product development will require significant cross-functional leadership to bring products and enhancements to market and will involve leadership of multi-year, multi-million-dollar development projects.  Leading development activities will require strong project management capabilities, business acumen and engagement through all phases of the development cycle and will include regular reviews with senior management to ensure alignment on business objectives and resource allocation. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Define and own the technical knowledge translation into the backlog – bridging the customer experience and the technical development teams
  • Act as the technical product owner to lead team through epic prioritization, story planning, backlog grooming and product delivery
  • Own and manage the API definitions and all integration to remove barriers in the software development process – being the technical lead between product management and engineering in the development of APIs
  • Establish and monitor key success measures (KPIs) for integration points and consistency across all SleepIQ applications
  • Manage the technical integration points within the SleepIQ® Technology platform – device and cloud-based software platforms
  • Gather, analyze and validate business, user, and technical requirements; ensure requirements are complete, accurate and fit with the stakeholder groups and customer experience expectations/satisfaction
  • Assist with the creation of use cases, process flows, simulations/prototypes, and test cases; participate in testing and launch validation needs
  • Manage technical and cross-functional timelines to ensure projects are on track and on budget to deliver against the market requirements
  • Build compelling business cases and product requirements for new opportunities by analyzing the customer experience, market trends and business needs
  • Partner with the other product owner/development leads within SleepIQ to ensure uniformity of the customer experience at every touchpoint
  • During research and development, perform analysis and evaluation of options, alternatives of product development paths in an agile manner
  • Actively resolve any open issues with new products coming to market, working cross functionally with business and supply partners
  • Host and manage development stand ups to ensure work is being executed against the right priorities
  • Develop and manage lab based and in-home product validation testing with engineering, consumer insights and outside IoT and app validation experts
  • Emotional Intelligence, passion for customer advocacy, desire to become a subject matter expert on the products released
  • Generate relevant insights for the business and leverage them to create products that will endear us to our customers
  • Manage technology lifecycle, trends, and the competitive landscape; using perceptual acuity to set a vision and advance the platform on behalf of the customer experience
  • Supporting product and the technical teams with the development of a technical roadmap that will support the future customer experience needs

Position Requirements: 

  • The ideal candidate will have exceptional background in product strategy, project management and communications
  • 6-10 years’ experience; technical application development, API development, project/program management, product management, product development experience are ideal
  • A strong understanding and familiarity with mobile technology (iOS, Android), web services (API, SOA, REST), SaaS and cloud-application infrastructure.
  • Experience with defining and managing APIs and be able to understand system & data architecture.
  • Understanding of the latest technical standards and best practices in web services, mobile app development, etc.
  • Able to engage engineering teams in define and designing data models, data governance policies and API security.
  • Serve as the product expert for all API interfaces; ensure customer and partner integration continuity.
  • Proven analytical and quantitative skills; ability to use multiple data sources and metrics to back up assumptions and develop business cases.
  • Experience with software development across highly complex systems required
  • Experience and strong knowledge of a stage gate development process
  • Proven track record of bringing forth and executing projects on time and on budget
  • Experience managing a connected software product platform
  • Strong cross functional leadership: demonstrated ability to engage teams and external partners to generate expected results
  • Ability to think both strategically and tactically in a high energy, fast paced environment
  • Exceptional interpersonal, influencing, and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Works independently with limited direction, but also works effectively in a team setting
  • Manages multiple priorities and thrives in rapidly changing environments
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects - work prioritization, planning and task delegation
  • Experience in working with globally dispersed teams
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field required
  • MBA preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Skilled in the Microsoft office suite, with strong knowledge of Microsoft project
  • Understanding of connected cloud-based product platforms
  • Experience with Jira, TestRail
  • Understanding of modular design concepts – both Mechanically and via Software

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to travel 25-35% of the time
