Senior Carrier Development Specialist

Job Location Minneapolis, Minnesota

Position Purpose 

Responsible for ensuring the best and most sustainable transportation lane management with optimal service to support our Sleep Number Network including all Delivery Distribution Centers, Assembly Distribution Centers, Distribution Centers and Sleep Number Plants. This role will manage all modes of Sleep Number controlled shipments, with a focus on service and cost; responsible to contract and negotiate carrier capacities to meet or exceed service level expectations and manage the entire Sleep Number Carrier Base.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for Carrier Relationship Management program, which includes conducting and managing formal carrier service performance reviews routinely to drive optimal performance.
  • Develop a culture of Continuous Process Improvement and Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to create Carrier Scorecards using internal feedback and data provided by multiple sources/tools.
  • Responsible for Cost Management program, which includes securing capacity and managing cost effective carrier base in support of Supply Chain.
  • Develop cost savings/avoidance initiatives through business case work including: cube utilization, mode shifts, supplier conversions, cross-dock, multi stop and consolidation opportunities.
  • Conducts and drives process driven procurement activities in support of large/small scale national, regional, international and local bids. This includes the end-to-end process bid strategy, carrier negotiations, contract negotiation and execution in partnership with peers and cross functional teams.
  • Support optimization initiatives and enhancements to increase carrier acceptance levels; accessorial reduction (detention, layover, overall accessorial avoidance), responsiveness with strategic partners and beyond.
  • Work closely with Planning, Sourcing, Central Fulfillment, Supplier Development and other internal teams on Supply Chain to drive improvements including Carrier Forums.
  • Work with transportation invoicing and audit team to resolve issues regarding payment and rates
  • Responsible for supporting entire Sleep Number Network.
  • Responsible for delivering against financial & operational metrics and P&L commitments.
  • Understand and comply with Sleep Number policies, procedures and business conduct, customs, governmental policies, and environmental regulations

Key Performance Indicators

  • Achieve and maintain 97% on-time delivery with new and existing carrier base through reporting and carrier interaction.
  • Hold carrier partners, all modes, to a 90% shipment acceptance rate
    • Minimize all spot bid opportunities and ensure contracted rate are in place 90% of the time
  • Maintain all carrier records: Contact information (sales, operations and accounting), Claims Records, insurance, W9, operating authority and all other pertinent information
  • Achieve and maintain a 98% invoicing accuracy to contracted rates, FSC and accessorials
  • Hold all carrier partners to parameters dictated on the overall Sleep Number Carrier Scorecard

Position Requirements, Education, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of 6-8 years transportation experience required
  • Carrier development experience with a large shipper is required
  • Contract negotiation and management required
  • Analytical skills required
  • Financial P&L responsibility required
  • Implementation of service tracking/program is a plus
  • Sleep Number Operating Company experience is a plus
  • Sleep Number Logistics experience is a plus

  • Sourcing Strategy Development Disciplined
    • Developed and launched processes to leverage your business presence in the marketplace, deliver against business needs and provide a competitive advantage now and in the future.
    • Improved total value for the company with respect to capacity and service. Interpret business and market data to shape insights which can be used to develop sourcing strategy.
  • Proven excellence in negotiations, including methodology and planning preparation. Experience in conducting negotiations in alignment with sourcing strategy driving outcomes legitimate to both parties and internal stakeholders
  • Optimized carrier selection & contracting: Identified and qualified carrier through rigorous criteria in accordance with sourcing strategy and establishes robust contract agreements.
  • Strong financial analysis and planning
  • Proven excellent carrier relationship management
    • Demonstrated ability to use a range of tools and techniques to improve carrier performance. Effectively works with carriers to unlock value from the relationship. Implement Performance Metrics & Tracking.
