Instructional Designer

Job Location Minneapolis, Minnesota


The Sleep Number Training department is charged with designing and developing innovative learning tools and processes for team members to better serve our dynamic customers who engage with our brand via web, chat, phone and store for sales and service support.

The Instructional Designer will design and develop learning solutions for a variety of audiences using different media including but not limited to web/computer-based training, instructor-led, virtual, social and blended.


  • Works with business partners and subject matter experts (SMEs) to determine learning objectives and appropriate learning solutions.
  • Creates training content based on learning objectives, instructional design methodologies and in a style that exemplifies our organization’s brand personality and design standards.
  • Designs and develops learning solutions for a variety of audiences using different media including but not limited to web/computer-based training, instructor-led, virtual, social and blended; is comfortable facilitating classroom training if that is the chosen delivery vehicle.
  • Develop content and facilitate instructor-led incumbent based training for the continuous learning training program.
  • Works with the Learning Technology Specialist to ensure content accuracy and proper functionality of content within the learning management system (LMS).
  • Manages project timelines and coordinates with team members and partners to meet project deliverables.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of training programs and makes recommendations for improvements.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology or related field.
  • 3-5 years experience in Instructional Design, preferably within retail, customer service or e-commerce industries.
  • Multimedia development experience in rich media tools required (i.e. Articulate 360/Storyline, Captivate, Camtasia, Adobe Creative Suite, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of learning management system (LMS) compliance standards (e.g. SCORM) preferred.
  • Experience working with learning management systems – content management, learner reporting, administration. Desired: experience implementing a new company-wide learning management system.
  • Creative instructional technology experience – i.e. gamification, social integration, mobile platforms.
  • Detailed knowledge of instructional design process and adult learning theory.
  • Excellent creative and analytical skills and the ability to convert information and needs into practical training deliverables.
  • Proven track record in designing and developing learning and development resources including instructor-led and web/computer-based learning.
  • Strong consulting capability and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience designing both soft skills and systems training.
  • Self-starter who possesses exceptional project and time management skills with great attention to detail.
  • Works well independently and as a member of a team.

  • Global thinker who performs well in high-pressure situations in a fast-paced, sometimes ambiguous environment.
  • Embraces change enthusiastically.
  • Is open to, proactively asks for, and acts on feedback received.
  • Ability to provide examples/portfolio of training development work.
