Director, Outbound Logistics & Distribution

Job Location Minneapolis, Minnesota

Sleep Number is a consumer-driven innovation company with a mission to individualize sleep experiences. To deliver on our customer promise, The Director, Logistics, Distribution and Warehousing will be responsible for leading and managing Sleep Numbers Outbound Logistics/Distribution organization and strategy. This position leads a comprehensive corporate team which is responsible for all the company’s functions associated in these areas.  This individual must work cross functionally and provides direction to multiple leaders in all functions associated.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Benchmarks, understands, and implements supply chain processes specific to logistics;  best practices and systems to achieve customer service and to minimize asset / logistics related costs.
  • Provide strategic leadership in developing and implementing a 3-5-year distribution network design, including location and configuration of distribution and light assembly operations
  • Lead and provide direction to distribution operations staff; build organizational capabilities ensuring development and succession plans in place for all key positions
  • Develop and execute annual operating budget
  • Manage and recommend processes to improve distribution warehouse productivity, cost per delivery, utilization, and customer satisfaction
  • Monitors operational service level and performance working through leadership to focus on continuous improvement.
  • Manage owned or third-party distribution center operations and LTL transportation, driving continuous improvement, ensuring company assets are protected, and customer satisfaction is met
  • Partner in assessing and selecting information technology systems for efficiencies and consistent operation in company owned and outsourced warehouse operations
  • Maintain close partnership with inventory control, quality, and reverse logistics teams to optimize total operational costs
  • Provide strategic leadership in developing 5-year logistics network design including location of distribution warehouses, optimizing freight transportation modes, minimizing reverse logistics costs and optimizing inventory control. 
  • Responsible to prepare, analyze, manage, and recommend proven processes to reduce time in transit, improve cost per delivery, increase percent of utilization, and ultimately improve customer satisfaction.
  • Strategically manage through leadership and elevate all aspects of transportation, warehousing and logistics for the company, while driving inventory accuracy and customer centricity.

 Requirements

  • Minimum of 15+ years of continuous career progression in the Supply Chain management in logistics; including 3PL management
  • Experience preferred in Retail and Manufacturing industries
  • BS in Business Management or Engineering, MBA preferred
  • Advanced degree in business or industrial/SC engineering preferred.
  • Proven experience reengineering processes
  • Experience in a continuous improvement environment, with knowledge and a proven record of executing lean principles to drive customer and shareholder value
  • Customer Centric focus
  • Understanding and practical experience in Logistic software systems selection and management
  • Proven negotiator for warehousing and 3PL partnerships
  • Strong understanding of logistics financials
  • International business experience a plus

  • Experience in strategic functional planning and organizational change management in supply chain and and/or operations management.
  • Excellent communications, negotiation, and management skills.
  • Ability to communicate cross functionally as well as up and down the enterprise
  • Effective at managing outsourced external partners to deliverables
  • Expert knowledge of supply chain ERP systems, bolt-on and custom tools/applications, and techniques.
  • Ability to effectively manage complex supply chain structure work in a fast-paced environment

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Management or relevant field required
  • Masters of Business Administration, preferred

Working Conditions:

  • Up to 25% travel based on business needs.
  • Inconsistent hours dependent on business needs
